Grand Opening of the MODERN SalonStudios features celebrity stylist Mike Karg
Arvada, Colorado, October, 2018 – Mike Karg, celebrity stylist, international platform artist and industry innovator, demonstrated his signature dry cutting system to Denver-area hairstylists at the recent grand opening of the MODERN SalonStudios at Indian Tree Shopping Center.
Using his trademark shears, Karg did innovative haircuts on four models during the two-hour demonstration at the studios. “Everywhere I go, women want the same thing,” Karg told the audience. “They want hair that makes them feel feminine and is easy to take care of. My belief is that a haircut should grow out for two to three months. If you need a cut in just two or three weeks, you haven’t had a good haircut.”
Creating long layers and an A-line on two of the models as they stood rather than sat in front of him, Karg encouraged stylists to get continuing education to stay up on their craft and its tools. “Technology continues to advance, but our jobs will not be erased because clients need us.”
The increasing popularity of salon studios, Karg said, is due to the fact that beauty pros are increasingly specialized and want to practice their profession free of the constraints of being in a traditional salon with set hours and policies. “It’s a massive trend,” he said.
One lucky guest was named the winner of the grand prize the company offered to celebrate its opening. Terri Sanders won a trip for two to Las Vegas and $100 in spending money, a value of $1,450. Other lucky guests at the event won prizes from a variety of industry professionals who donated gifts, including Ali Davidson, Associated Hair Professionals (a one-year membership); Sharon Connolly, State Beauty Supply Denver (Joico gift basket); Patrick Mathes, Mountain Star Salon Services (Davine’s and Keratin Complex Gift Lanterns); and Steve Brownlee, Professional Salon Concepts (J Beverly Hills beauty product gift boxes).
Among the VIPs at the event were Dot Miller of the Arvada City Council and her husband Ranger Miller.
Peter Friedauer, who like Karg is a native of Switzerland and has enjoyed a distinguished career in the beauty business, is one of the key people behind the new studio suites. Friedauer owned the successful Zuri Salon & Spa in Cherry Creek North before turning his attention to designing Chi-inspired and functional salon studios at two locations in the Denver metro area. A total of 57 studios are available, offering hairstylists, barbers, massage therapists, aestheticians, nail technicians and other beauty pros contemporary and well-designed suites where they can operate their independent businesses. The studios range in size from 117 to 138 square feet for singles and 150 to 203 square feet for doubles.
The salon suites model has taken the industry by storm in recent years because of the autonomy it gives professionals. “When you lease a suite, you can set your own hours and serve your clientele around a schedule that meets both of your needs,” Friedauer said.
the MODERN SalonStudios offer design and function not currently available anywhere else in the industry.
“Clean-lined work spaces are what beauty professionals and customers want,” Friedauer said. Traditional suites are cluttered and lacking in function, he added, noting his goal is to create “a new generation of salon suites design.” Having spent decades as a stylist, salon owner and member of such prestigious organizations as Intercoiffure Mondial, he understands a beauty professional’s needs when it comes to everything from salon chairs and shampoo stations to the retail glass-front display fixtures.
Applying his European design sensibilities and Swiss precision to the creation of the MODERN SalonStudios, Friedauer designed the cabinetry and fixtures in the suites so that all a beauty pro needs to do is bring his or her tools, supplies and retail products to the site. Everything else is furnished, including a 24-inch HDTV with free Wi-Fi, a mini bar fridge and towels (on-site laundry facilities are provided).
Beauty professionals can go to the MODERN SalonStudios to see the layouts and identify a space that suits their needs. Some spaces will accommodate two stylists. The website also has photographs of the suites so stylists can view what the spaces will look like.
The MODERN SalonStudios spaces offer a full glass storefront, with a glass door entrance and retail products displayed in the window. When clients walk down the aisles, they see one business after another with various retail products featured. Each location also features a lobby with a welcome lounge and interactive information center.
“My goal is to empower beauty professionals to take back their ability to create art in an uncluttered studio while allowing their clients to escape from the demands and pressures of their daily lives,” Friedauer said. “The Chi-inspired clean-lined spaces create a positive energy flow and a professional salon-like environment. We are building the salon studios of the future.”
